Atitlan: Diving into Inner Calm for Finding Freedom

Purple jacaranda blooms frame a serene lake Atitlan with a distant volcano under a partly cloudy blue sky. Peaceful and vibrant scene.

Lake Atitlán, located in the highlands of Guatemala, is recognized as the deepest lake in Central America. With a maximum depth of around 340 meters, this lake is known to be one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. This body of water resides in a massive volcanic crater, surrounded by jagged hills and volcanoes.

The word Atitlán translates to "between the waters" from the Nahuatl language.

Lake Atitlan's vastness and amazing elegance are nearly impossible to describe; a humbling experience arrives when in its presence. Dotted with Mayan villages and serene landscapes, this blue wonder can awe even the most agnostic among us.

The water fluctuates between blue and green, with a dash of fog and breeze in the early morning. Grand is the beauty of this glass-crisp lake in the early dawn, sun rising, a hint of fog across the surface.

When we dive into the surface, experiencing the depth, moving further and further into the stillness, the more serene and peaceful this lake becomes. Just as when we turn inward and dive to the depths of our inner being, we are as still and tranquil as this magnificent lake.

The surface of the lake may become choppy and windy, as with fluctuations of the mind, though our true being is the depth of this lake, undisturbed and impervious to the external disruptions above. Here, we find our freedom as we dive into the tranquil depths of our internal spaces.

When we remain in the here and now, connected to the depths of our inner being, the waves and wind arrive and dissipate as we allow them to pass by, indifferent and mindful. Just peaceful and joyous within the unstirred stillness of now, we become a lake of magical serenity.

Cheers!
